COOL DOWN ON NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY UK

On 18th July 2021, we celebrate National Ice Cream Day in the UK. In fact the whole of July has been traditionally considered ice cream month since 1984. A refreshing summer treat enjoyed across the globe, it dates back centuries to before the first BIRRA MORETTI was even brewed. So whether you prefer gelato over ice cream, or sorbet over frozen yoghurt, cool down with your favourite and discover why Italians hold it so close to their hearts.

THE ICE AGE

It is thought that the origins of ice cream can be traced back 5,000 years to ancient China where crushed ice was sourced on the mountain side and flavoured with fruit juices as a cool, refreshing treat. Venetian explorer, Marco Polo came across this method during his travels in Asia and shared it back in Italy on his return where it quickly evolved and developed.

ICE CREAM VS. GELATO

For Italians, ice cream is more commonly known as ‘gelato’ - which directly translated means something frozen - and has its own unique taste profile. Their differences really lie in their flavour and texture. Where Americans choose to use cream, Italians make gelato a little healthier with milk, giving it a much lower fat content and allowing the flavours of gelato to intensify and really stand out. Air is whipped into ice cream, which also causes it to lose a large amount of its flavour, whereas gelato is much denser, with a taste so rich it will leave you wanting more.

AN AUTHENTICALLY ITALIAN TREAT

Much like BIRRA MORETTI, nothing compares to the simple pleasure of enjoying gelato in the company of friends. With gelaterias lining many a street in Italy, the frozen dessert is enjoyed throughout the year bringing people together for a little treat. You’ll often find Italians sitting in the piazzas, walking the streets and enjoying each other’s company with a cone in hand, debating the best flavours.

The most loved flavours in Italy include pistacchio, cioccolato (chocolate), stracciatella and limone. Italians are known to choose more than one scoop or flavour, keeping the taste profiles similar, so as not to mix fruit flavour with chocolate. If you’re browsing the gelaterias in the UK, a true artisan Italian gelato should appear natural in colour, free from colourings that could make it look too bright. Most importantly, it should be served with a slightly softer consistency than ice cream, allowing the flavours to easily melt in your mouth. Like a true Italian, there’s no harm in trying a few out until you find the right gelato for you!

GELATO AT HOME

Unlike ice cream, gelato is easier to make at home with no need for an ice cream maker, just the simple ingredients of milk, eggs, sugar and the flavour profile of your choice. Those looking for a gluten and lactose free alternative can substitute the dairy for a plant-based milk like coconut, already rich in flavour. Be sure to prepare yours in advance of the 18th July so you can commemorate the day with your own frozen creation. And why not raise a BIRRA MORETTI or BIRRA MORETTI Zero too and toast to a deliciously authentically Italian treat.
