AN ITALIAN BANQUET FIT FOR THE QUEEN

Italians adore celebrations and national holidays – they savour every opportunity to spend extra time with family and friends. As the UK gears up to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a four-day bank holiday weekend (2nd - 5th June), we look at how you can inject Italian zest into your own outdoor street parties and celebrations.

AN ITALIAN TAKE ON OUTDOOR GET TOGETHERS

Italians are famed for their strong sense of neighbourly community spirit, and their love of socialising outdoors with a chilled BIRRA MORETTI L’Autentica or BIRRA MORETTI Zero in hand. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee gives us ideal moments to get our neighbours, friends and family together to experience this wonderful Italian ‘gioia di vivere’ (zest for life).

Towns and cities across the UK will be hosting official public parades, events and activities. What’s more, our streets will be abuzz with local street parties offering a lively and sociable vibe – just as the Italians enjoy.

Local Community Togetherness

Italian summers are full of local community events, with people getting together for festivals, live music, and parades. The Italian national holiday for Festa Della Repubblica, which celebrates the founding of the Italian Republic on 2nd June, is one of the national symbols of Italy and sees proud displays of patriotism - just as we’ll experience.

Celebrating and socialising outdoors, with great food and authentic BIRRA MORETTI is central to these colourful and spirited Italian get togethers. If you’re planning a street party, you can re-create this atmosphere with bright decorations, and feel-good music to get everyone in the spirit.

If you don’t have plans for a local street party, why not head out to an organised event to join in the festivities just like the Italians do? Or, for something more laidback, head to your local pub or restaurant to enjoy an ambience similar to what you would find in Italy’s piazzas.

An Italian Spread Fit for the Queen

Quality food is central to every occasion in Italy, so dial up your celebrations with an Italian banquet fit for the queen. Italians are great at pulling together, and love sharing family recipes, so ask everyone to bring a dish along. Easy-to-share and serve Italian dishes are perfect for outdoor street celebrations and get togethers in local parks. Antipasti, frittata and caprese salad (tomatoes, mozzarella and basil) are great choices, as they don’t need to be served hot.

If you’re planning a street party, you could pull out your barbeque to cook up some delicious Italian-style sausages. Or, why not prepare and cook up our delicious tomato and pepper bruschetta, or tomato, bocconcini and basil crostini to enjoy outside, partnered with a crowd-pleasing nduja (a spicy spreadable sausage from the region of Calabria) pizza? They’re all authentic Italian recipes that compliment the taste of BIRRA MORETTI L’Autentica and BIRRA MORETTI Zero, and don’t require individual plates and cutlery.

For a truly patriotic touch, why not theme your Platinum Jubilee feast around foods Her Majesty prefers? The queen is said to enjoy fish, with fresh vegetables – both of which pair nicely with BIRRA MORETTI Zero. ‘Alici marinati’ (marinated fresh anchovies) - a firm favourite of the Amalfi coast – would work nicely, alongside our delicious uova alla piemontese (sliced courgette with eggs).

Fish pâtés are also a firm favourite of the queen, along with beef – making our beef fillet & rocket salad perfect as a lighter summertime option. The Queen also has a love for chocolate, particularly chocolate biscuit cake, and her famous chocolate perfection pie. Try adding an Italian twist by using amaretti biscuits in a biscuit cake (which does not need baking, so easy to prepare), or by making ‘tenerina’ - a traditional chocolate pie from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.

Only the Best for the Queen

Just like the Italians, the queen loves fresh and locally-sourced ingredients – particularly from her estates. She’s known to enjoy salmon from the River Dee in Balmoral, crème brûlée made using oranges from Sandringham, white peaches grown at Windsor Castle and strawberries from Balmoral.

Why not cook up an Italian dish using home-grown fruits and vegetables, or using produce and fish sourced from your local farmer’s market, and meat from your local butcher?
